Having some great side dishes isn't just for taste, though... a bit of variety is always good, plus you can sneak in some extra nutritious food (like veggies), especially if they're cooked on the grill - those delicious smells wafting through the air are sure to build anticipation!

Not all of your side dishes will be cooked on the BBQ, of course. But for those that are, using skewers is an easy way to 'portion' out servings, plus they look nice and are very popular. You can use bamboo skewers by soaking them first in water for an hour or two before threading the food onto them. This will help to prevent the skewers from burning on the grill. If you decide you like presenting food on skewers, you might want to invest in metal skewers instead - that way you won't have the extra step of having to soak them first. They're less hassle, re-usable, and easy-to-clean.

Barbecued vegetables and potatoes are a natural choice for sides, but don't be afraid to experiment with other types of foods too. BBQs are all about great food and good friends!
